The University of North Carolina is the oldest public university in the nation, tracing its roots to the state’s 1776 constitution. Today more than 220,000 students are enrolled in over 200 academic programs that span 16 campuses across the state, in addition to the North Carolina School for Science and Mathematics, the country’s first public residential high school for gifted students. More than 50,000 degrees are granted annually.

Research across the university system is diverse, ranging from education policy to biotechnology and nanosatellites. More than 260 centers and institutes bring experts from multiple fields together to address complex issues. The North Carolina Research Campus houses over a million square feet of oratory and office space and is designed as a public-private partnership to foster collaboration and advancements in the fields of biotechnology, nutrition and health.
