Iowa State University, located 30 minutes north of the state capital in Ames, is a land grant college founded in 1858. Nearly 35,000 undergraduate and graduate students attend the university, and more than 6,000 faculty and staff work there. Eight colleges, including agriculture and life sciences, business, design, engineering, human sciences, liberal arts, veterinary medicine and graduate studies, offer more than 100 academic majors. Over 800 student organizations provide additional opportunities for student learning and leadership.
Research occurs in nearly 100 centers, institutes and laboratories. Five U.S. Department of Agriculture research labs, the nation’s first genomic-based agricultural breeding program, world-renowned virtual reality facilities, the only U.S. Department of Energy research facility on a university campus and multiple plant science and bioeconomy institutes are part of the university’s research enterprise. The university’s extension and outreach programs share expertise with the community and offer research-based education to improve the lives of local residents.
