Chartered in 1895, Northern Illinois University is a comprehensive teaching and research institution with over 20,000 currently enrolled students and over 3,000 faculty and staff members. Located in DeKalb, the public university has satellite centers in Hoffman Estates, Naperville and Rockford. Its mission is to promote excellence and engagement in teaching and learning, research and scholarship, creativity and artistry, and outreach and service.

The university is comprised of seven degree-granting colleges with 56 undergraduate majors and 80 graduate programs. Its nationally accredited programs include those in business, engineering, nursing, visual and performing arts and all teacher certification programs. The high-level research institution includes well-regarded programs in chemistry and biochemistry, geology and environmental geoscience, and Southeast Asian studies and counts 12 research centers and institutes.
