Founded after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in order to study the subsequent loss of wetlands and ensuing ecological and health impacts, Public Lab has emerged as a leader in supporting and building models for community science and civic participation. Today, Public Lab’s 5,500 active participants co-develop tools and collect valid scientific data individually and in organized groups.

Public Lab operates with the ethos that when people can easily and reliably track local effects associated with environmental issues that impact local communities—increased flooding, poor air quality, pollution and destruction of wetlands, etc.—they can make better-informed decisions. They envision a future where all communities can use scientific processes to collect, archive, annotate, authenticate, publish, share, and present their own data sets, leading to the ability of communities to co-lead efforts towards environmental mitigation, management and adaptation.
