Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
The Gowgaia Institute is operated by the nonprofit Earthlife Canada Foundation. The institute works to promote a diversified economy, prosperous communities and a healthy environment in the Haida Gawaii archipelago off the coast of British Columbia. Over half of the local population is native Haida people who have lived on the land for thousands of years. The Gowgaia Institute uses community networking, communication campaigns, mapping, technical analysis and land use planning to build awareness, encourage public dialogue and inspire local engagement in regional sustainable development activities.
Projects range from protecting spawning habitat for wild Pacific salmon through forest and marine resource management to publishing stories and community perspectives on conservation and development. A speaker’s series inspires dialogue about critical local issues such as aboriginal title and rights, leadership, governance and new models for sustainable living.
