Founded in 1891, the New York Botanical Garden is a living museum of over one million plants on 250 acres in Bronx, New York. The National Historic Landmark counts over 950,000 visitors and mounts five major exhibitions each year.
Educational programming serves over 300,000 people, including Bronx families, school children and teachers, who learn about plant science, ecology and healthful eating. Teachers from New York City's public school system participate in professional development programs that train them to teach science courses at all grade levels.
The organization’s plant research and conservation programs employ almost 200 staff members who work in the garden's state-of-the-art molecular labs as well as in the field, where they lead programs in 18 countries. Programs include fieldwork to discover new species, active collaborations to promote forest and habitat protection, and plant molecular biology studies.
