The Global Biodiversity Information Facility operates through a network of nodes, coordinating the biodiversity information facilities of participating countries and organizations, and by working collaboratively to share skills, experiences and technical capacity. The facility provide a single point of access to more than 570,000,000 records; the accessible data relates to more than 1.6 million species, collected over three centuries. It has been cited as a source of data in numerous studies spanning the impacts of climate change and other pressing global issues and has aided participating countries in setting up national portals to better inform their citizens and policymakers about their own biodiversity.
