Founded in 1935, the San Mateo County Historical Association preserves the county's historical sites, maintains an archive of the area’s history and operates a museum dedicated to the history of the county. The mission of the association is “to inspire wonder and discovery of the cultural and natural history of San Mateo County.”

The association operates three historical sites: the San Mateo County History Museum in Redwood City, the Woodside Store in Woodside and the Sanchez Adobe in Pacifica. All offer family friendly and interactive exhibitions. The association’s public programs for schools, families, and adults include workshops, lectures and family days. Additionally, it operates school programs at the Folger Stable in Woodside, as well as a museum store whose proceeds support its ongoing activities including the interactive education programs.
