The Instituto do Homem e Meio Ambiente da Amazonia (Institute of Man and Environment in the Amazon) promotes sustainable development in the Brazilian Amazon through research, public policy development, wide dissemination of information and training. Founded in 1990, the research institute is based in Belém, Pará, and has published hundreds of technical papers and dozens of books, booklets and other publications.
The institute’s studies have contributed to the development of wide range of public policies in the Amazon, including those related to land-use planning, protected areas, development tools and technical standards for forest management. The organization also offers professional training in the areas of ecology, forestry, environmental law, rural economics, geoprocessing, regional planning and public policy.
