Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Located on a 62-acre, green-certified campus in the heart of San Francisco, Laguna Honda Hospital is a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center for adults and people with disabilities, owned and operated by the San Francisco Department of Public Health. The hospital was founded in 1866 to care for Gold Rush pioneers, and it continues its tradition of care for the underserved today. The Laguna Honda Foundation supports the hospital’s quality improvement and organizational development initiatives and underwrites research for the creation of therapeutic environments and new approaches in long-term care and rehabilitation.
Approximately 765 residents receive clinical, therapeutic and restorative care in one of 13 specialized programs that address a range of conditions from complex and chronic illness to neurological and orthopedic disabilities such as dementia and HIV/AIDS. Practitioners include in-house physicians, social workers, activity therapists, dieticians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech pathologists, psychiatrists and pharmacists. Every year, 240 people complete rehabilitative therapy and move into a lower level of care or independent living. Respite care is also available for families who are caring for disabled seniors or adults at home.
