The Regional Parks Foundation, headquartered in Oakland, California, was established in 1969 to encourage private contributions in support of the East Bay Regional Park District. The foundation is committed supporting the regional parks through fundraising that provides broader public access, resource protection and preservation, education and recreational programs and acquisition of parklands.
Annually, the foundation raises funds to provide support for a group of core program initiatives such as camping scholarships to at-risk or disabled youth from low-income families residing within Alameda and Contra Costa counties and low-cost transportation provided to organized groups, allowing underrepresented populations to enjoy regional park access. Other efforts include environmental restoration projects, including grasslands and habitat restoration, and special capital improvement projects that increase public access by developing new amenities and restoring historical resources.
The foundation also supports the international Healthy Parks, Healthy People initiative, which aims to encourage people to use parks and benefit from the connection to the natural environment as the world becomes more urbanized. The initiative focuses on efforts to reach out to children, seniors, urban residents and ethnic groups that may not be using the parks as often as the general public.
