In 1960, the individual California State Colleges were brought together as a system, which was renamed the California State University in 1982. Today, 23 campuses house comprehensive and polytechnic universities that enroll more than 460,000 students and employ 47,000 faculty and staff.
The oldest campus, San Jose State University, was founded in 1857, and the newest, California State University, Channel Islands, opened in 2002. The system offers more than 1,800 degree programs in approximately 360 areas of study, conferring about half of the bachelor’s degrees and one third of the master’s degrees granted in California. Many programs accommodate part-time, late afternoon and evening study for nontraditional students.
A number of institutes and centers focus research and education on issues of relevance to California. The Center for California Studies is the state’s only multi-disciplinary, university-based institute addressing California policy issues. The California African American Political and Economic Institute studies economic and political development in California and trains current and future African American leaders.
