Founded in 1925, the University of Miami is a private research institution focused on teaching, research and service to the South Florida region and beyond. Eleven schools and colleges serve more than 16,000 students from all 50 states and 121 countries across nearly 300 undergraduate and graduate programs. Class sizes are small, with half of all undergraduate classes having 17 or fewer students. Dual degree honors programs, combining undergraduate and graduate study, exist in exercise physiology, Latin American studies, law, marine geology, medicine, biochemistry and molecular biology.

Research is a major focus with more than $330 million in sponsored expenditures annually. While the majority of research is housed at the Miller School of Medicine, faculty conduct hundreds of studies each year in other areas including marine science, microbiology, engineering, education and psychology. Numerous centers and institutes investigate some of the world’s most entrenched health and societal problems. The Center for Hemispheric Policy, for example, examines issues affecting countries in the Western Hemisphere, and the Center for Computational Science considers new approaches for data management, visualization, cloud computing and software. Medical school research advances understanding, treatment and management of health issues such as AIDS, aging, heart disease, diabetes, sports performance and patient safety.
