Guidestar USA was founded in 1994 and is considered the world’s largest source of information on nonprofit organizations. This public charity collects, organizes and presents information that enables users to make better decisions in charitable giving.
Guidestar gathers and disseminates information about all IRS-registered nonprofits, including each nonprofit's mission, legitimacy, impact, reputation, finances, programs, transparency and governance. As of 2014, Guidestar provided information about 2.4 million organizations, with 7.2 million unique users accessing its database.
We support Guidestar in continuing to build its online database of information about nonprofit organizations. By expanding the information presented in nonprofit profiles, Guidestar enables nonprofits and funders to identify trends, gaps and opportunities across a set of similar organizations and to understand their impacts on and interactions with beneficiaries.
In addition, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation leverages data from Guidestar to optimize charitable giving in each of our four program areas.
