Founded in 1850, The Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (known historically as San Francisco General Hospital) is a top academic medical center and San Francisco’s main public hospital.
San Francisco General offers culturally competent and compassionate care to a diverse community of patients in more than 20 languages. The hospital is owned and operated by the City and County of San Francisco, Department of Public Health, and takes part in a city-wide integrated health care system, providing primary, specialty and hospital care for vulnerable populations. Approximately 80 percent of its patient population either receives publicly funded health insurance or is uninsured. The hospital also cares for the homeless, who make up about 8 percent of its patients.
Established in 1991, the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation is an independent charitable support organization that has raised more than $92 million to fund initiatives that support research, education and care at San Francisco General. The foundation raises private support to augment public funding for the hospital for patient services, facilities, equipment purchases and research efforts.
