Fundação Amazônica de Defesa da Biosfera (Amazon Foundation of Defense of Biosphere) was founded in 1994 by members of the National Institute of Amazonian Research (INPA) to study the physical environment and living conditions of the Amazon region. Located in Manaus, Brazil, the organization works to expand the sustainable use of natural resources in the Amazon region.

Projects have included a census of the indigenous resident population in Tabatinga City, an inventory of amphibians, lizards, snakes, crocodiles and quelnios along the Madeira River, and a study of the use of alternative waste generated by the timber industry in the Manaus and Itacoatiara states. The foundation also sponsors an award for scholarship in the area of tropical biology, as well as courses and seminars related to the sustainable development of the Amazon.
