The Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System consists of three inpatient facilities located in Palo Alto, Menlo Park and Livermore, plus seven outpatient clinics in San Jose, Fremont, Capitola, Monterey, Stockton, Modesto and Sonora. The system provides a full range of patient care services with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research. It also maintains one of the top three research programs in the VA with research centers in geriatrics, mental health, Alzheimer's disease, spinal cord regeneration, schizophrenia, rehabilitation research and development, HIV research and health economics. An affiliation with the Stanford University School of Medicine provides a rich academic environment including medical training for physicians in virtually all specialties and subspecialties.
The Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System is part of the Veterans Health Administration, a federal agency. Overseen by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, the agency has an annual budget of approximately $59 billion and employs more than 305,000 health care professionals and support staff. It oversees the United States’ largest integrated health care system that includes hospitals, community-based outpatient clinics, nursing homes, Vet Centers and domiciliaries. These health care facilities serve more than nine million veterans each year.
