Founded in 1969, Friends of the Earth is an environmental organization with offices in Berkeley and Washington, D.C. The organization is a member of Friends of the Earth International, a global network representing more than two million activists in 75 different countries. .

In the United States, Friends of the Earth advocates in the halls of Congress, state capitals and with community groups to defend the environment and work towards a healthy environment for all people. The organization employs a variety of tactics in its advocacy campaigns—from policy analysis and grassroots activism to litigation and creative communications. Project areas include climate and energy, food and technology, oceans and forests, and economics for the Earth. In recent years, Friends of the Earth has worked to impose air pollution limits on ships and persuade grocery stores to not sell genetically engineered salmon, among other achievements.
