Based in San Francisco, the Open Source Applications Foundation was founded in 2002 to help spread the adoption of open-source software. The foundation’s mission is to conduct research and further the development of knowledge into the design of applications software, with a focus on software for non-technical computer users to use in their ordinary work and personal lives.

The foundation aims to achieve this goal through wide adoption of open source application software, meeting the unique and under-served needs of small group collaboration, demonstrating that open source software can serve a general audience in the consumer market, and offering a choice of platforms and full interoperability amongst Windows, Macintosh and Linux versions.

Among its efforts, the foundation developed Chandler, personal information management software designed for task management and calendaring.
