The Amazon Conservation Team is dedicated to preserving and protecting South American rainforests in partnership with local indigenous communities. Founded in 1996, the organization pioneered the idea of biocultural conservation, demonstrating that the viability of Amazon ecosystems and the integrity of local cultures are interdependent.
Since inception, the organization has worked with more than 30 indigenous tribes to advance conservation priorities and pressing threats to indigenous lands in the Amazon. The team focuses on indigenous land management and protection, ethnographic mapping, indigenous cultural development for younger tribal members and food security based on traditional farming methods. Projects range from training indigenous land patrols to manage cross-border territories to tracking local biodiversity and demarcating indigenous lands.
