Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Save the Redwoods League, founded in 1921 and based in San Francisco, is committed to rescue from destruction representative areas of primeval forests and cooperates with California State Parks, the National Park Service and other agencies in establishing redwood parks and other reserves. The organization relies on private donations and funding from the state and other partners to buy land. Since its inception, the league has protected more than 189,000 acres of forestland. Over 60 percent of the redwoods in California's state redwood parks have been protected by the organization, including groves in Humboldt Redwoods State Park and the Redwood National and State Parks. In addition, Save the Redwoods League supports restoration, research and education programs, and gives small grants to other organizations involved in ecological conservation.
Our work with the Save the Redwoods League ranges from the purchase forest lands in the Santa Cruz Mountains that helps protect old-growth redwoods, the upper reaches of the Pescadero Creek watershed and coho and steelhead habitat, to the creation of a conservation planning tool that facilitates real-time analysis of redwood forest threats in eight Bay Area counties.
