Penobscot East Resource Center is a nonprofit organization that works to secure a diversified fishing future for the communities of Eastern Maine and beyond. These goals are achieved by developing and implementing innovative programs that provide value for today’s fishermen and drive more sustainable management approaches for future fisheries. An essential component of the organization’s work is connecting the knowledge of fishermen, the findings of scientists and the world of policymakers.

The center was formed in 2003 when a group of community members and fishermen, known as the Stonington Fisheries Alliance, identified the need for an organization with bigger reach and resources to tackle science, management and policy questions that impacted local fishermen.

This group founded Penobscot East Resource Center in Stonington, Maine, to help community fishing groups in the state see beyond the horizon of their own harbors and take part in the care of their fisheries. In its first ten years, the center has launched many innovative programs and studies, and has created a place where fishermen’s voices can be part of the management dialogue.
