The Island Institute works to sustain Maine’s island and coastal communities. Founded in 1983 to provide forestry and conservation services to Maine landowners, its focus has expanded to include economic and community development, education, energy and marine resource protection. The fifty person staff also works with other island communities off the coast of the Carolinas, Alaska and Maryland.

The institute works to grow new leaders, create professional networks and convene stakeholder groups to address local needs together. It helps diverse island and coastal businesses increase their productivity and revenue. It connects isolated rural coastal schools with one another through technology, curriculum and professional development events for educators. It aims to reduce the cost of energy for coastal homeowners, businesses and municipalities with programs that increase efficiency and renewable consumption. The institute also helps coastal communities adapt to changing environmental and market conditions with planning projects that outline management strategies to sustain fish stock and protect commercial fishing jobs.
