Foundation president, Harvey Fineberg, and chairman emeritus and co-founder, Gordon Moore, discuss the Statement of Founders’ Intent with staff.
Based in Lima, Peru, the Centro de Conservacion, Investigacion y Manejo de Areas Naturales (Center for Conservation, Research and Management of Natural Areas) is committed to the protection of Cordillera Azul National Park, which was established in 2001. Consisting of 1.35 million hectares, the park encompasses an area of Andean forestland teeming with biological diversity. The organization develops strategies for the management of the Cordillera Azul area and for the responsible use of its natural resources, including a project to avoid deforestation. Involvement of neighboring communities, critical to the long-term survival of the park, rests at the center of the organization’s collaborative programs–including those focused on biodiversity conservation, developing and disseminating research on areas of high biodiversity in Peru and promoting alliances and strategies at local, national and international levels for development and implementation of conservation policies. The organization also promotes sustainable economic alternatives for local communities.
