XPRIZE Foundation is an educational nonprofit organization whose mission is to bring about radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity through highly leveraged, incentivized prize competitions. Based in Culver City, California, the organization was founded in 1995.
The first XPRIZE was the Ansari XPRIZE for suborbital spaceflight won by Mojave Aerospace Ventures. The $10 million competition incentivized the creation of a reliable, reusable, privately financed, manned spaceship that could make private space travel commercially viable. Subsequent XPRIZEs have been awarded in the areas of fuel-efficient vehicles, oil cleanup, rocket systems and sensing technology. Future prizes are planned in areas such as ocean weather, earthquake prediction, fair voting, bioterrorism, women’s safety, urban transit, cancer detection and asteroid deflection.
The organization’s STEM-based educational programs engage young innovators by developing competitions and creating unique opportunities for learning. Programs include an online competition to design, create and program robots; an innovation award where kids educate adults on the ways that they need and want to learn; and a full-dome planetarium show on the Google Lunar XPRIZE, which chronicles teams around the world competing for the largest international incentivized prize in history to landa robotic spacecraft on the Moon.
