Save Mount Diablo, based in Walnut Creek, California, works to preserve the land on and around Mount Diablo to ensure healthy ecosystems and continued access for people and wildlife.
Mount Diablo is the northernmost, signature peak of the Diablo Range and lays at the center of Contra Costa County. The mountain is the single most important crucial wildlife habitat area in the East Bay. It is home to 253 vertebrate animal species and 900 plant species–three quarters of which are native, which represents one tenth of the native plants found in California. Since the organization’s founding in 1971, preserved open space has increased from less than 7,000 acres to over 110,000 acres in more than 40 parks.
In support of its mission, Save Mount Diablo preserves, defends and restores the natural lands on Mount Diablo and its foothills. The organization protects property through acquisition then restores the lands through stewardship prior to turning them over to a park system for public access. Additionally, it defends lands through land use planning to ensure that habitats and land preservation are incorporated into land use plans.
