New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, known as New Mexico Tech, serves the state and beyond through education, research and service focused in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Located in Socorro in the Rio Grande Valley, the university offers associate, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in science and engineering, as well as programs in technical information and management of business. Founded in 1889 as the New Mexico School of Mines, today New Mexico Tech’s enrollment stands at over 2,000 students, and its student to faculty ratio is 13 to 1.
New Mexico Tech’s more than a dozen research divisions work with private industry, government agencies and other universities and employ its students at all levels in their work. Divisions include the Magdalena Ridge Observatory, Energetic Materials Research Testing Center, National Center for Genome Resources, Langmuir Laboratory for Atmospheric Research and Petroleum Research and Recovery Center.
