The Internet Archive is an online nonprofit library, founded in San Francisco in 1996, with millions of free digital books, movies, software and music. The archive works with the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institute to provide access to materials for researchers, historians, scholars, people with disabilities and the general public, preserving the Internet’s content for generations to come.
Officially designated as a library by the state of California in 2007, the archive has nearly 2.5 million users and 382 forums for idea exchange. While users can both download and upload content to the library, the majority of content is captured automatically through web crawlers. The Way Back Machine is the organization’s searchable interface for World Wide Web content. As of May 2014, over 400 billion pages had been archived.
