MakeWay Charitable Society is a national charity with the mission to provide uncommon solutions for the common good by helping Canadians secure a healthy environment in ways that promote social equity and economic prosperity. Every year, the organization supports, convenes or directly funds hundreds of initiatives, from neighborhood-scale social programs to national conservation efforts.
Founded in 2000, MakeWay Charitable Society has offices in Vancouver, Toronto and Yellowknife. Its unique shared platform powers social change initiatives across the country from shared in-house governance and administration expertise. MakeWay Charitable Society also works with donors to create strategic investments that maximize positive change. ChangeCapital, a donor-advised fund, was launched in 2014 and brings impact investing and philanthropy together to generate greater environmental and social change.
In 2007, the organization coordinated landmark financing for the Great Bear Rainforest agreements, resulting in $120 million to support conservation management and sustainable economic development in the region. The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation helped support this effort in addition to dozens of others to help realize MakeWay Charitable Society’s vision of a healthy environment, social equity and economic prosperity for all Canadians.
