This grant supports Trout Unlimited's Hatchery Reform Project. Hatchery fish (bred and reared under artificial conditions) are more likely to be eaten by predators, go astray during migrations, and are less successful in spawning; approximately five billion hatchery smolts are released per year. Outcomes for this grant include creation of a diverse coalition for hatchery reform and protection of wild fish, early adoption of a landscape model for hatcheries management, the connection of public funding for hatcheries to a landscape model, and maintenance of legal safeguards for fish listed under Endangered Species Act protection.
