The J. Craig Venter Institute will use this grant to survey the metagenomes of 17 marine environments stretching across the Indian Ocean and two sites in French Polynesia. Grant outputs include the generation and annotation of 2.5 million sequencing lanes of DNA sequence data, which will be submitted to the CAMERA database. This effort will assess microbial diversity at very large spatial scales and will complement previous metagenomic surveys carried out at the scale of ocean basins.
