Grant Name:

Ion Microprobe for Marine Micobiological Applications

  • Date Awarded:
    Sep 2005

  • Amount:
    $250,000

  • Term:
    24 months

  • Grant ID:
    GBMF733

  • Funding Area:
    Science

Pennsylvania State University is using this grant to develop enhanced instrument capabilities at UCLA’s Ion Microprobe Laboratory for the study of uncultured marine microorganisms and their geochemical roles in the environment. Dr. House from Pennsylvania State University is one of only a few scientists in the US applying these methods to the analysis of fossil material to infer the geochemical activities of microbial communities; his efforts will directly enhance the research capabilities of Dr. Orphan, who uses the Ion Microprobe to analyze extant microbial communities. Outcomes for this grant include modification and calibration of ion microprobe for microbiology applications.
