Fundacion Ecuatoriana de Estudios Ecologicos, with the University of Texas at Austin and the Center for Environmental Studies of Latin American, is using this grant to integrate conservation with community demands in eastern Ecuador. Management of these indigenous lands focuses on biodiversity protection as well as strengthening community-based governance of natural resources. Specific outcomes include strengthened capacity of three indigenous communities (Zapara, Shiwiar, and Achuar) for long-term resource management and biodiversity conservation, management plans for 1.5 million hectares of indigenous lands, and development of a unified conservation strategy for the greater Pastaza watershed—some five million hectares.
